It’s been a pretty good couple of months for former Erie High School standout Kyle Leahy.

In April, Leahy was presented the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame’s 2017 male college athlete of the year award for his superb sophomore season at Colorado Mesa when he helped the Mavericks reach the Division II College World Series. Last month he was named to the D2 Conference Commissioner’s Association All-Region team for his junior season and on Wednesday he was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America Division II Baseball Team.

Not to mention one other little thing that happened on Wednesday — Leahy was drafted in the 17th round of Major League Baseball’s amateur draft by the St. Louis Cardinals.

Leahy, a 6-foot-5, 200 pound righthanded pitcher, was taken 513th overall by the Cardinals, the third player with local ties selected during the 2018 MLB draft.

On Monday, former Silver Creek pitcher Cole Winn was taken in the first round of the draft, 15th overall by the Texas Rangers. Devlin Granberg, a 2014 graduate of Holy Family High School, was selected by the Boston Red Sox during the sixth round on Tuesday, 190th overall.

Leahy went 7-2 with a 4.81 ERA this season for Colorado Mesa, finishing with 85 strikeouts in 86 innings pitched. A 4.0 GPA student, Leahy earned the RMAC Summit Award this year and was named the RMAC Academic Player of the Year for the second straight season.

As a sophomore, Leahy went 13-0 with a 1.41 earned-run average, striking out 96 batters in 108 innings while walking just 13.

As a senior at Erie High in 2015, Leahy was the Longmont Times-Call Player of the Year, going 9-1 with a 0.41 ERA as the Tigers reached the 4A state tournament for the first time.
